Should I recite Iqaama before Naafil prayer?

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahmann Murad

May Allah bless you brother, Ameen.

There are two calls to the prayer; Adhaan and Iqaamah. The Adhaan is the 'announcement' that the time of prayer has entered, whereas the Iqaamah is a call to the people that the prayer is about to be performed. In relation to this, Adhaan and Iqaamah are called before the five obligatory prayers and not for the Nawafil (superogatory) prayers.

There is a great reward in calling both the Adhaan and Iqaamah before a obligatory prayer. The Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, said: "If one calls the Iqaamah (alone) and then prays, the two angels (who record our deeds) will perform prayer with him, but if he calls the Adhaan and Iqaamah, an army of Allah's creation will pray behind him." (Targhib wat-Tarhib - Authentic)

No Adhaan or Iqaamah is called for a Naafilah prayer.
