Is Marijuana like alcohol?

Answered by Shaykh Abdurrahmann Murad

Assalamu Alaikum. May Allah bless you, Ameen!

Marijuana is actually far worse than ethyl alcohol. The damage it does to one's health is extreme! We seek refuge with Allah from that. Ameen

Allah, the Exalted, says: "O you who believe, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone alters [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful." (5:90)

The word Khamr, which is commonly translated as 'alcohol,' is much broader than just alcohol. The proper translation of this word is 'intoxicant'. This is also clarified in Arabic with a descriptive definition: "What clouds the mind and impairs judgment". Since marijuana intoxicates, clouds the mind and impairs one's judgment, it too would be considered 'Khamr' and would take the same ruling as well.

As for marijuana being used as a cure for ailments, it should be clear that it is not. Looking at it from an Islamic perspective, the Prophet, may Allah exalt his mention, said: 'There is no cure in those things that Allah has prohibited upon you.' (Silsilah as-Saheehah 4/175).

Allah knows best.
